Starting with an illustration of the former leader, visitors to the site can click through a number of his most well-known quotes, coupled with illustrations depicting stages of his 'Long Walk to Freedom'.
The slides feature some of his most well-known words of wisdom, such as “education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world” and “the greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall.”
The Google Doodle is being shown in almost every country in the world today.
Google animator Katy Wu, who created the doodle, said in an interview: “At first I thought I would have to make a very serious, sombre sort of doodle and I wasn’t sure what to do.
“But after learning more about Mandela as a person I started to understand that he was a man with a lot of character, and not always just a serious figure. That started to give me more ideas about how to approach this doodle.
Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison after being charged with attempting to overthrow the state and sabotage, eventually being released after the fall of the Berlin Wall and becoming South Africa's first black president in 1994.
He went on to guide the country from apartheid to democracy after a life filled with hardship and struggle, and died in December last year aged 95.
