The ad ends with the line, "The average dog eats better than millions of children." But for many South Africans, the nerve it struck was outrage rather than sympathy.
Many users on YouTube complained that the ad was racist and “insulting to children”.
“this is an untrue way of life. it reflects that white people only are the rich and suppress the african children,” wrote Martin van der Walt.
According to ENCA, a South African television broadcaster, the original video received more than 20,000 views before Feed a Child removed it from YouTube, replacing it with an edited version including an explanation from its founder.
Charmaine Gxilishe said Feed a Child “could have use a real dog to emphasise” its point.
But the charity’s Arnau van Achterbergh, wrote in a comment on YouTube: “Feed a Child aims to provide support for the devastating impacts caused by poverty and malnutrition in South Africa.
